With the Post-Graduation Work Permit, international students who have graduated from accredited Canadian designated educational institutions can apply for an open work permit in order to acquire valuable work experience in Canada.
Through the PGWPP, skilled Canadian work experience in the national occupational code (NOC) A, O, or B increases graduates’ chances of qualifying for Canada PR through the Express Entry pool’s Canadian experience class.
Determining the Duration of the Post-Graduation Work Permit
The applicant’s international passport validity date may not extend the duration of the permit. In the Global Case Management System, the visa officer would note the reason in the “Notes” box if the applicant’s international passport expired prior to the post-graduation work permit’s validity period.
If the applicant for a post-graduation work permit has their international passport renewed or replaced, they can apply for an extension to keep their PGWP in full force.
A PGWP cannot be extended if the applicant’s international passport has reached its expiration date and the length of the work permit could not be provided at the time of the application.
